Lambton County Council Approves 2012 Budget

Wyoming, ON – Lambton County Councillors met today to approve the Corporation's 2012 budget, which will see a 2.9% net increase to the municipality's tax base.

A number of changes were made to the draft budget, which was presented to Councillors in February calling for a 3.03% increase.   The budget approved today refers a consultant's senior staff salary report to the 2013 budget, eliminating $28,072 from the 2012 draft budget, maintains existing service levels and will provide funding to several community organizations.

New funding incorporated into the Corporation's budget includes:

  • a motion to grant $100,000 to the YMCA of Sarnia-Lambton over four years.
  • a motion to grant Tourism Sarnia-Lambton's request for an additional $74,250 for one year, with a request that the organization provide an update to Council in 2013 concerning the progress made on its 18 Core Activities, along with a report outlining the funds it has raised from the private sector.

At the meeting, Councillors also supported a future $250,000 contribution toward the construction of a withdrawal management centre, provided the Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) moves forward with a plan.

The 2012 budget includes a contribution of $2,268,962 to reserves, which relates to 3.75%, bringing the Corporation's reserves to a total of $22.8 million.

"Everyone certainly did a good job bringing in this draft budget, but many of us have concerns for 2013 as we await budget announcements from upper levels of government," said Lambton County Warden Steve Arnold.

The County of Lambton operates a wide variety of programs and services available to the public such as land ambulance, provincial offences court, three long-term care homes, 26 libraries, two museums, an art gallery, local roadways, community health services, housing services, social services, building services and planning and development services.   The Corporation's annual budget is $175.3 million and it employs approximately1275 employees across several sites.
