A defendant must choose one of the three options on the back of the Part 1 offence notice within 30 days of the offence date. If a defendant does not choose an option within 30 days, a Justice of the Peace will implement a conviction and additional costs will be applied.
Option 1: Guilty Plea - Voluntary Payment |
By choosing this option, you are admitting guilt to the offence and must pay the Total Payable amount indicated on your ticket. Payments can be made online, by mail, or in person at any provincial offences office in Ontario. |
Option 2: Plead Guilty with an Explanation |
This option is a guilty plea but gives the defendant an opportunity to request an extension of time to pay and possible reduction in the fine amount, by a Justice of the Peace. The charge and any demerit points associated with the charge remain the same and a conviction will be registered. To choose this option, bring your offence notice (ticket) to the Court Services Department located at 150 N. Christina Street, Sarnia, ON, on Thursdays at 9:00 a.m. sharp. You will go before a Justice of the Peace to explain your financial situation and request an extension of time to pay. The Justice of the Peace may reduce the fine amount, as well. |
Option 3: Trial Option - Not Guilty Plea |
By selecting Option 3, a defendant is pleading not guilty to the offence and is requesting a trial. Sign the back of the offence notice (ticket) under Option 3 and mail it or drop it off to the Court Services Department. Court Services will notify the defendant of the court date and resolution meeting by mail. |
