Sarnia, ON – The County of Lambton has agreed to donate a piece of vacant land on George Street in Sarnia to Indwell Community Homes for Indwell’s development of supportive housing in Lambton County.
The property, located adjacent to the EMS Station at 373 George Street, is a suitable location for a supportive housing project as identified in the County’s Supportive and Affordable Housing Strategic Development Plan. The property is located on an arterial street with multi-residential developments, community, civic, and commercial services, has excellent public transit connectivity, and is in close walking distance to many amenities including retail, pharmacies, and recreation/green space.
“We know there is a pressing need for supportive housing in our community. This project will work towards meeting that need and supports Lambton County Council’s number one priority of increasing availability of affordable and supportive housing,” said Lambton County Warden Kevin Marriott. “We’re looking forward to working with the knowledgeable team from Indwell to provide important services to residents in need.”
The County’s Supportive and Affordable Housing Strategic Development Plan recommends approximately 50 permanent supportive full-service apartments at this site. Indwell will develop the project, and an interdisciplinary Indwell team will provide residents with housing, social and health supports. The Indwell team will include social workers, nurses, addiction and mental health counsellors, and housing support workers working together to provide an enhanced level of support that meets each resident’s unique needs and goals. This results in high levels of housing stability for the residents, and community benefits associated with addressing chronic homelessness.
“Indwell is pleased to partner with the County of Lambton, local service providers and community partners to bring supportive housing to the County and City of Sarnia,” said Jeff Neven, CEO, Indwell. “This is a new community for Indwell. We look forward to contributing to Lambton County’s communities and to launching our first supportive housing program on George Street in Sarnia. Every door we open together becomes a solution homelessness.”
Indwell will host community consultation and information sessions in the coming weeks.
