Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery exterior

Sarnia, ON – The Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery would like to remind the public their last chance to view Skawennati: From Skyworld to Cyberspace and Darla Fisher-Odjig: Beneath the Mask: Symbols as a Healing Phenomenon is quickly approaching. The exhibitions, which opened October of last year will close on Saturday, March 18, 2023.

Skawennati: From Skyworld to Cyberspace

Skawennati’s (Mohawk, Turtle clan) work examines Indigenous cultural history through avatars and virtual environments. Using Haudenosaunee philosophies such as the Sky Woman Story of Creation and the Ohén:ton Karihwatéhkwen (Thanksgiving Address), Skawennati approaches cyberspace as a metaphor for the future. Drawing on ancestral narratives to chart alternative realities is a key principle of Indigenous Futurism, the movement that reimagines the artistic and social potential of Indigenous peoples in years to come. The works in this exhibition adopt the framework of Indigenous Futurism to perceive the future as being synonymous with possibility. This is often achieved through positive self-imagery and affirming stories that empower Skawennati, her family, and her Haudenosaunee origin.

Darla Fisher-Odjig: Beneath the Mask: Symbols as a Healing Phenomenon

Darla Fisher-Odjig walks through many worlds. Fisher-Odjig is a Lambton County-based artist creating powerful paintings, sculptures and poems that reveal how colonization has impacted her life. As a visual artist, poet, and art therapist she brings a soulful and heartfelt engagement to her work that is both challenging and healing. Her lyrical paintings sweep the viewer into worlds both familiar and strange but always ground themselves in realities that cannot be denied.
