Wyoming, ON— Lambton County Library's Summer Reading Challenge will launch on Saturday, June 14, with a free event at Victoria Park in Petrolia from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This year's theme, "Wild Wonder," celebrates wildlife with themed activities and programs for all ages.
Wild Wonder Launch Party
The free launch party will feature inflatables, face painting, birds of prey, reptile meet-and-greets, crafts and activities, and a reptile stage show.
In case of inclement weather, the event will be held at Greenwood Arena. Weather-related venue changes will be announced on the Library's Facebook account, @LCLibraryCA, and website, LCLibrary.ca.
"We've created a true wildlife adventure for families to kick off our Summer Reading Challenge," said Vanitia Campbell, Public Services Coordinator, Youth. "This launch party is our biggest yet, offering children the chance to see amazing animals up close while getting excited about reading and learning."
About the Summer Reading Challenge
The Summer Reading Challenge is Lambton County Library's annual literacy initiative designed to keep children, teens, and adults engaged with reading throughout the summer months. Running for six weeks from July 2 to August 15, this year's "Wild Wonder" theme invites participants to explore the natural world through books and activities.
“Kids, teens, and adults can participate in the Challenge and enjoy fun activities,” explained Campbell. “When families work together on reading goals and activities, kids build and maintain skills and prevent summer learning loss. The Summer Reading Challenge is a great resource with lifelong benefits, and it’s completely free to join.”
Registration
Register for the Summer Reading Challenge at any Lambton County Library location during operating hours or online with Beanstack. Registration kits for ages 0-17 will be available while supplies last. The kit includes materials to create earth balls with instructions in English and Anishinaabemowin. It also includes stickers and a paper animal mask.
Activities & Prizes
Participants can enter prize draws for LEGO sets, outdoor gear, and gift cards from Tourism Sarnia-Lambton by completing activities during the challenge. Kids and teens can win French or English books for their personal libraries by reaching reading milestones during the challenge. This year, participants are encouraged to track their reading progress throughout the challenge to qualify for weekly prize draws.
