Sarnia, ON - Throughout the month of March the Sarnia-Lambton Local Immigration Partnership (SL-LIP) has collaborated with Forum Research Inc. and the University of Western Ontario to develop a survey with a focus on the experiences of discrimination in Lambton.

“The genesis of the project came from a group of organizations across southwestern Ontario seeking community-specific, qualitative data to better help each of us understand the problems of discrimination in our own communities,” said Stephanie Ferrera, Project Coordinator, SL-LIP.

Forum Research Inc. is now administering the survey to measure and better understand the experiences and effects of discrimination at the local level in Lambton County.

“Our goal is to be more effective in responding to hate crimes, ultimately with the target to reduce them, but also having a proactive approach so when they do happen we can better support the groups who are experiencing them,” stated Aruba Mahmud, Social Researcher, SL-LIP.

Individuals will be randomly selected and contacted by phone. Those who receive a call from Forum Research Inc. will be asked to complete pre-screening questions to determine their eligibility to participate. If individuals are eligible and willing to participate, they will receive a link to the survey through a text message or by email. The responses will be collected through a secure online survey platform and remain confidential.

Participation in this study is completely voluntary, and there will be no compensation for participating. Upon completion of the survey, participants can elect to be contacted for follow up research. After the collection of responses is completed, researchers at Western University and authorized investigators will examine the data to understand local experiences of discrimination in Lambton and other municipalities.

If residents receive a call from Forum Research, they are encouraged to participate in the survey. Participants are welcome to ask questions about the survey by contacting the lead researcher from Western University, Victoria Esses at vesses@uwo.ca.

What is it?

The study will look at experiences of discrimination in Lambton County. Forum Research Inc. will be calling residents to ask them to participate in this voluntary study and complete an online questionnaire which contains questions about yourself, your experiences of discrimination, responses to discrimination, sense of belonging, and wellbeing. Your responses to the survey will be collected and given to researchers at University of Western Ontario who will use them to examine local experiences of discrimination. The responses will be collected through a secure online survey platform and remain confidential.

Why participate?

By participating in this study, you will have contributed to results that will help inform community partners to develop strategies that lead to more welcoming communities. The survey is being undertaken in many municipalities in Southwestern Ontario.

Questions?

We are here to answer any questions you may have about the study, or to discuss the purposes of this research further.
