Point Edward, ON – The Lambton COVID-19 Immunization Task Force met Tuesday, April 20 to discuss updates to the COVID-19 vaccine rollout plan in Lambton County. Here are some highlights from the meeting:

A total of 40,103 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to date. That represents 34 percent of the eligible population in Lambton County who have received one or more doses (37,763 first dose, 2,340 second dose).

The Task Force is pleased to report the majority of people included in Phase 1 of the Provincial Government’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout plan have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine in Lambton County. This includes individuals who are 80 years of age and older, at least one in-home caregiver per household, essential caregivers, and Healthcare workers. All seniors who live in congregate settings like long-term care, retirement and Elder Care homes have been fully vaccinated with two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. Vaccinations to Indigenous populations and adult recipients of chronic home healthcare are ongoing.

At the beginning of April, the region moved into Phase 2 of the Province’s immunization program. Lambton Public Health (LPH) is following provincial guidance and has implemented their immunization plan targeting four groupings – Age, Setting, Essential Workers and Medical.

Age – Registration is open for individuals who are 60 years of age and older (or who are turning 60 in 2021). If you’re eligible and want to book your vaccination, please go to LPH’s vaccination registration page. Please be patient, our clinics are now fully booked until May 5. Additional clinics will be open for booking soon.

Setting – Immunizations are in progress for those who live and work in high-risk congregate settings like supportive housing, developmental services, emergency shelters, mental health and addictions, adult correctional and children’s residential facilities and more. Caregivers in select congregate care settings are also eligible including developmental services, homes for special care, and others.

Essential Workers – Vaccinations are ongoing to the Province’s first group of essential frontline workers who cannot work from home which includes elementary/secondary school staff, childcare and licensed foster care workers, faith leaders who provide end of life care, agriculture/farming and food manufacturing workers, etc.

Medical – Vaccinations are also currently being administered to individuals with Highest-Risk and High-Risk health conditions along with one essential caregiver.

This week, the Province of Ontario expanded the COVID-19 vaccination eligibility at pharmacies and primary care settings to individuals aged 40 and over. To find a location that is offering the AstraZeneca vaccine go to the Ontario Government’s pharmacy locator. If you have questions about any of the COVID-19 vaccines including their efficacy versus effectiveness, please go to LPH’s Resources page.

The local branch of the Canadian Red Cross and Lambton Elderly Outreach (LEO) are now offering free transportation to Lambton County vaccination clinics to individuals who are 50 years of age and older who do not have access to a vehicle, public transit or another form of transport. If you’re interested in booking this service, please call them directly at 519-845-1353 (extension 360) for LEO or 519-332-6380 for the Canadian Red Cross.
