Sarnia, ON - The Sarnia-Lambton Local Immigration Partnership (SL-LIP) and the Centre Communautaire Francophone de Sarnia are hosting several free and low-cost events celebrating Black History Month this February to honour the legacy of Black Canadians and their communities.

The following events will be taking place throughout the month of February:

  • The Anti-Black Racism Arts Challenge is designed to inspire youth in local schools to express how they feel about racism and discrimination through multi-medium arts. Participants’ contributions to the Challenge will be showcased at the Sarnia Library and at the Centre Communautaire Francophone de Sarnia in the month of February before being moved to other venues across the County.
  • Centre Communautaire Francophone de Sarnia is hosting a family style dinner featuring African cuisine, live entertainment, and more on February 18 beginning at 5:30 p.m. Reservations are required and tickets can be purchased on the CCFS website.
  • Watch The Boy who Harnessed the Wind at the YMCA Learning and Career Centre on February 9 at 5 p.m. and Harriet at the Sarnia Library Theatre on February 21 at 2 p.m. Free to attend, registration not required.
  • Stella Adjoke, a Francophone multimedium artist from Montreal, will be performing blues singing and electric SLAM at several free events during the month of February. Free to attend, registration not required.
  • Curators with the Buxton Museum will be at the Centre Communitaire Francophone de Sarnia on Thursday, February 27 from 9:30 to 11 a.m., to present historical artifacts related to the Elgin (Buxton) Settlement from its founding in 1849 to the late 19th century. Free to attend, registration not required.

Throughout the month of February there will also be online webinars, resources and other events posted on the Sarnia-Lambton Local Immigration Partnership Facebook page. Follow the SL-LIP on Facebook for updates.

The Sarnia-Lambton Local Immigration Partnership is a community-wide, multi-sectoral partnership that works to increase collaboration between settlement agencies and smooth the settlement and integration experiences for newcomers.
