Back to SearchPoint Edward, ON - Even though summer is winding down, Lambton Public Health reminds Lambton County residents that mosquitoes and ticks are still active and precautions are needed to protect against the risk of West Nile virus (WNV) and Lyme disease.
"Mosquitoes will continue breeding until we see frost and cold temperatures, and tick activity will only slow down once we see consistent cold temperatures below freezing," says Lori Lucas, Health Protection Supervisor at Lambton Public Health. "Residents should take steps to protect themselves during outdoor activities."
Be prepared:
- Apply insect repellent.
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors.
- Do a tick check after any outdoor activity.
The reminder follows confirmation today of a second positive mosquito pool for West Nile virus in Corunna. Earlier this season, the presence of WNV was confirmed in Lambton after a mosquito pool in Wyoming and a crow in Sarnia tested positive. WNV is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.
