Smoking in the workplace? Text 226-909-3003

Sarnia, ON - A new, confidential, text-based reporting system introduced by Lambton Public Health will help protect people in the workplace from second-hand smoke.

"This means any workplace, including vehicles such as taxis, cars and company trucks," said Paul Buttery, Health Promoter at Lambton Public Health. "If you suspect someone has been smoking in the workplace, simply text details to 226-909-3003. It's quick, easy and anonymous. Enforcement Officers will follow up as quickly as possible."

Stickers with the text number, available for employers to post in their vehicles, will:

• provide a visual reminder of the text-based reporting service
• increase accountability
• assist business owners and managers with due diligence

Smoking or holding lit tobacco in an enclosed workplace, including workplace vehicles, is an offence as outlined in the Smoke-Free Ontario Act. Employers and employees can be subject to fines. Employers are obligated to ensure employees and clients are aware smoking is prohibited, and to post "no smoking" signs in the workplace, including workplace vehicles.

Lambton Public Health offers assistance to employers to comply with the law, assistance with policies and access to initiatives to support quit smoking attempts.
