Back to SearchPoint Edward, ON - Whenever the snow arrives, Age-Friendly Sarnia encourages everyone to be part of a Community that Cares by shovelling snow for a neighbour or fellow community member. Snow removal was identified as a priority in the Age Friendly Sarnia Committee's 2017 Action Plan.
“Icy or snowy walkways can pose a hazard for slips, trips and falls,” said Jennifer Graham, Health Promoter at Lambton Public Health. “A snow-cleared driveway and sidewalk is important for residents to be able to leave their homes and access services in the community, or to receive in-home support services.
"If you are able, help others clear their driveway. This act of kindness not only shows you care, it helps older individuals with accessibility needs."
According to the Ontario Injury Data Report (2018), falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations for older adults. Preventing falls helps older adults maintain their independence and quality of life.
Remember, when assisting a neighbour, winter can be harsh. Take precautions to ensure you are safe and warm. During a Cold Weather Alert dress in layers, shield exposed areas from the wind such as head, neck and face, and limit time outdoors.
