2024 Progress on the Canatara Cabin Restoration Project
The historic Canatara Cabin at Lambton Heritage Museum is taking shape again. In 2024, our team has made amazing progress putting this treasured building back together!
We started by checking all the logs from when the cabin was taken apart in 2020. In the summer, we rebuilt it piece by piece and found local logs from the same time period to help repair and replace any damaged logs. The logs were stacked to make the walls and a big crane helped put a newly cedar shingled roof back on top. Windows were installed and the cabin has been wrapped for the winter. Museum staff is now working hard to fill the cabin with historic items to show how people lived long ago.
In 2025 there is still lots of work to do – we need to hire specialists to install chinking, the wooden first floor, stairs to the second floor, and rebuild the field stone fireplace. This work cannot continue without your help! Visit the Canatara Cabin page at heritagemuseum.ca to learn more and donate today. Help us keep this local treasure standing for years to come!
This heritage preservation initiative is partially funded by the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario).
