Upcoming events at Lambton County Library

One Seed Lambton launching 2023 season

One Seed Lambton is a program to encourage everyone to grow their own produce and save their own seeds for next year’s planting. Each year, a single seed variety will be announced and available at no cost to all participants. Stay tuned! The seed variety chosen for this year will be announced on March 1, 2023.

May to September, programs and workshops that explore the life cycle of a plant from planting to harvest will take place throughout Lambton County. All levels of gardening experience are welcome, from those who have never grown a single plant to those who have green thumbs.

Visit lclibrary.ca to learn more about the Seed Library, and stay tuned for details on this year’s One Seed Lambton announcement!

International Women’s Day programming

Lambton County Library’s International Women’s Day programming will be highlighting women of Lambton County, both past and present.

Additionally, events held at the Sarnia Library and Sarnia Library Theatre will give participants the opportunity to view the Famous Five Maquette sculpture on loan to the library, a replica of the original Famous 5 Foundation’s Women Are Persons! monuments in Calgary and Ottawa, during each event.

Learn more and register on the online Library event calendar.

Voices of Lambton - Women in Business
Wednesday, March 1, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.

Participants will learn about what drives these women and about their successes and challenges as they have broken barriers while achieving success in the business world.

History of Women in Lambton County
Monday, March 6, 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Sarnia Library Theatre

Join Lambton Heritage Museum Curator/Supervisor Dana Thorne as she explores local stories of women in Lambton County and shares photographs and artifacts from the museum collection. Participants will have the opportunity to view the artifacts on display at the end of the presentation.

In this moderated panel discussion, four local women will share influential moments in their lives and careers, adversities they have overcome, impactful choices they have made, issues they have championed, and lessons they have learned along the way. Participants will learn about what drives these community leaders who, in addition to community advocacy, share a commonality of working in traditionally male-dominated fields.

Return of the Tundra Swans at Lambton Heritage Museum

Lambton Heritage Museum is gearing up once again for the Tundra Swans to make their annual stop in the Thedford Bog behind the Museum.

Each spring the Tundra Swans return to Lambton County as part of a 6,000 kilometer migration loop between Chesapeake Bay and the Canadian Arctic. In a good year, there may be as many as 15,000 individual birds resting on the bog, attracted by the melt-water of spring and the remnants of the prior year’s crop. The number of swans each day can change depending on time, weather, and field conditions.

Before going to Greenway Road to see these beautiful birds in person, stop by Lambton Heritage Museum and explore the Tundra Swan exhibit. Learn about the swans and the history of the Thedford Bog and participate in swan-themed activities. The exhibit will be available from February 15 to April 14 and can be viewed during the Museum’s regular hours: Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

To increase your chance of seeing swans, visit returnoftheswans.com for updates and daily estimates of the current number of swans in the area. You can also call the Museum at 519-243-2600 for migration updates.

Oil Museum of Canada virtual exhibit – “A Disgraceful Riot”

March 14, 2023 marks 160 years since the Oil Springs race riot. To mark the anniversary, the Oil Museum of Canada has developed a virtual exhibit detailing the events of the riot as they are known, as well as context on the experiences of Black labourers in Oil Springs and their contributions to local oil industry.

The exhibit can be viewed on the Oil Museum’s website, along with other virtual exhibits highlighting International Drillers and oil heritage in Lambton County.

211 Ontario

In large scale emergencies that have the potential to create a surge in public inquiries, Lambton County may work with 211 Ontario to field calls from the public.

When activated, calling 2-1-1 or visiting 211Ontario.ca will provide residents with the latest information about the emergency. Details may include information about relief assistance or instructions to help protect public health and safety.

Remember, when a disaster strikes, calling 9-1-1 should only be used to report emergencies or request assistance from police, fire, or emergency medical services (ambulance), not to obtain information.

Day-to-day, 211 Ontario provides public information about community and social services. Service is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year in 175 languages.

For more information about the use of 211 Ontario during emergencies, visit EmergenciesLambton.ca.
