To request a sign or for address assignment, please contact the municipality where the property is located or the County of Lambton Development Services Department at 519-845-0801 ext. 5257 or planning@county-lambton.on.ca.

911 address signs are critical for first responders to locate a property during an emergency. In Lambton County, 911 address signs are issued by the local municipality the property is located in.

Standards

911 address signs displaying the property's designated municipal number must meet the following design standards:

  1. The municipal number erected shall be assigned under the Policy Manual by the local municipality;
  2. All numbers must be a reflective material and a minimum height of 4 inches; and
  3. The municipal number must be a reflective white or silver material on a reflective dark green background.

You need to follow these placement standards when putting up a 911 address sign on your property. The 911 address sign must be:

  1. Located at the main driveway serving the property, in a location visible from the travelled portion of the road;
  2. Placed perpendicular to the road;
  3. Located within the public road allowance, as close to the property line as possible, or on the property line, while still remaining clearly visible from the travelled portion of the road;
  4. Attached to its own post, 1.2 metres (4 feet) above grade, unless otherwise approved by the municipality; and
  5. Double-sided, clearly displaying the municipal number on both sides of the plate.

Exceptions

Although we recommend that all 911 address signs be posted according to the standards set out above, the following exceptions may be made for select identified urban and hamlet areas.

These exceptions only apply if the municipal numbers are a minimum of 7 inches in height, or, if made of a reflective material, 4 inches in height, and are clearly visible from the travelled portion of the road in all seasons, under all lighting and weather conditions.

  1. If the main building is located within 15 metres (50 feet) of the road allowance and clearly visible from the travelled portion of the road, the municipal numbers may be placed on the building to which the number applies.
  2. If a garage or similar structure is located within 15 metres (50 feet) of the road allowance and clearly visible from the travelled portion of the road, the municipal numbers may be placed on the garage or similar structure.
  3. If the owner of the property chooses to display the municipal number in some other manner that permits the municipal numbers to be clearly visible from the travelled portion of the road, and identifies the main access of the property, the owner of the property may be permitted to post the municipal numbers in an alternate manner.
  4. If the main building is a commercial building, the municipal number may be displayed on the commercial building signage, provided the sign is located within 15 metres (50 feet) of the fronting public road allowance.
