The County of Lambton, together with the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority, partnered with Tree Canada, with support from sponsor LCBO, to plant 30 native trees at six County of Lambton locations through funding received through the Treemendous Tree Grant program.  

On October 30, 2023, 30 native trees were planted at six County of Lambton facilities with the goal of increasing tree canopy coverage in Lambton County.

Tulip, Canada Red Maples, Ohio Buckeyes, Downy Serviceberries, Butternut, Red Oak, and Swamp White Oak trees were included in this initiative. To learn more about these types of trees, click on the names below.

Tulip Tree

The Tulip Tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) is a deciduous tree native to Canada. It is also known as tulip poplar or tulip magnolia.

Height: 25 to 35 metres

Canada Red Maple

The Canada Red Maple (Acer rubrum) is a deciduous tree native to Canada. It is also known as swamp maple or soft maple.

Height: 25 metres

Ohio Buckeye

The Ohio Buckeye (Aesculus glabra) is a deciduous tree native to Canada. It is also known as horse chestnut or American buckeye.

Height: up to 15 meters

Downy Serviceberry

The Downy Serviceberry (Amelanchier arborea) is a deciduous tree native to Canada. Serviceberry trees bloom in the spring, supporting pollinators, and produce an edible fruit.

Height: up to 12 metres

Butternut

The Butternut (Juglans cinerea) is a deciduous tree native to Canada. The Butternut belongs to the walnut family and produces edible nuts in the fall.

Red Oak

The Red Oak (Quercus rubra) is a deciduous tree native to Canada. The Red Oak provides food sources to some mammals and birds through its leaves, stems and acorns.

Height: 20 to 30 metres

Swamp White Oak

The Swamp White Oak (Quercus bicolor) is a deciduous tree native to Canada. Acorns from the Swamp White Oak provide a food source to birds and small mammals.

Tree canopy coverage in the County

Current tree canopy coverage in Lambton County is 13.44%, which is about half of the recommended level for a healthy environment. All Lambton County businesses, schools and homeowners are encouraged to plant and care for trees on their properties as together we can make a difference to reduce the impacts of climate change.
