The County of Lambton is committed to providing residents with safe and efficient roadways. During the winter, we need increased maintenance to keep the roadways clear and safe. Unfortunately, winter patrol activities may damage mailboxes or other private features located within the County road allowance.
Damaged mailboxes
If a collision between a mailbox and winter maintenance vehicle damages or destroys a private mailbox, as determined by the County, the County will pay full compensation to the owner for the repair or replacement of the mailbox, to a limit of $50.00.
However, if the displacement of snow from the roadway damages or destroys the mailbox, the County will not reimburse the owner for repair or replacement, as the County is fulfilling its obligation to the travelling public. It is the responsibility of the resident to ensure construction of the mailbox is in a suitable location and maintained well.
Installing a mailbox
The installation and identification of rural mailboxes must conform to the following specifications:
- The mailbox supports shall be wooden and no more than six (6) inches in diameter.
- Place the mailbox along the right hand side of the road according to the courier's line of travel, at a setback distance of 2 metres (8 feet) from the edge of pavement.
- Attach the mailbox securely to a fixed post or cantilever arm and ensure the bottom of the box is 1 meter (3.5 feet) above the roadway.
- Identify the mailbox by having the name of each box holder printed in permanent lettering at least 1 inch high on the side of the box visible to the courier.
